The Church commemorates Hieromartyr Eleutherius and his mother Anthia.
Saint Eleftherios, originally from Rome, was raised in the Christian faith by his mother Anthia, who had been catechized by Paul the Apostle. She instilled in him the teachings of the Holy Gospel and the traditions of the Church.
At the age of fifteen, Saint Eleftherios was ordained a deacon after receiving a thorough Christian education and discipline.
His exemplary spiritual life led him to eventually become Bishop of Illyricum. When Emperor Hadrian learned of his strong morals and Christian activities, he ordered his arrest out of envy and arrogance.
Despite enduring many tortures, Saint Eleftherios remained steadfast in his faith, inspiring the faithful and humbling the pagans with his courage. Even in the arena of Rome, the wild beasts refused to harm him, showing him respect. He was ultimately beheaded, receiving the grace of the Apostles from Jesus Christ as he followed in their footsteps.
Upon embracing the lifeless body of her son, Saint Anthia was also beheaded, highlighting her unwavering dedication as a loving mother who protected and nurtured her child in society.
