Saint Basileus, as a faithful bishop, stood firm in his defense of the Christian faith against the persecution of Licinius. His courageous actions in protecting the young virgin Glaphyra from the advances of the Emperor and his subsequent martyrdom are a testament to his unwavering commitment to his beliefs.
Even in the face of death, Saint Basileus remained steadfast, choosing to sacrifice his life rather than betray his faith. His martyrdom and the miraculous recovery of his relics serve as a reminder of the power of faith and the ultimate victory of good over evil.
Let us honor the memory of Saint Basileus, who gave his life for his beliefs, and draw inspiration from his example of courage and devotion to the Christian faith.
Under the influence of impure desires, Licinius attempted to violate the virgin Glaphyra, who served the empress. Glaphyra sought help from the empress, who arranged for her to be sent away from Nicomedia to Pontus.
Glaphyra found refuge in Amasea, where Bishop Basil and other Christians welcomed her. Grateful for preserving her virginity, Glaphyra wrote to the empress, who sent support to the church in Amasea. Unfortunately, a letter from Glaphyra fell into Licinius’s hands, leading to her and Bishop Basil being brought back to Nicomedia.
Tragically, Glaphyra passed away before they could return. Bishop Basil, after enduring torture and imprisonment, was beheaded and thrown into the sea in 322 A.D. His body was later found near Sinope and buried in Amasea.
Emperor Constantine defeated Licinius, exiling him to Gaul. Thus, Licinius met his end, while Bishop Basil’s memory was honored by those who knew of his sacrifice.
