The Orthodox Church commemorates today the Prophet Isaiah and the Great Martyr Christopher.
The Holy Great Martyr Christopher, originally known as Reprebus, lived during the reign of Emperor Decius. His conversion to Christianity was a miraculous event that changed the course of his life. Initially a soldier in the Roman legions, he later dedicated himself to helping people cross a river by carrying them on his shoulders.
One day, a small child approached Christopher and asked to be carried across the river. As Christopher carried the child, it became heavier and heavier, until he reached the other side and the child revealed himself as Christ the King. This encounter transformed Christopher, who was baptized by the Holy Hieromartyr Babylas and given the name Christopher, meaning “bearer of Christ.”
Saint Christopher is often depicted in Orthodox hagiography as a man carrying Christ on his shoulders, symbolizing his unwavering faith and devotion. He is revered as the patron saint of drivers and martyred for his steadfast belief in Jesus Christ.
Today, we honor the memory of Saint Christopher and reflect on his selfless act of service and faith. May his example inspire us to carry Christ in our hearts and serve others with love and compassion.
