In a resolute address to the U.S. Congress, Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to persist in the conflict in Gaza until Israel attains “total victory” over Hamas. He argued that the war was not just for Israel’s defense but for the protection of all democracies.
Netanyahu emphasized, “We’re not only protecting ourselves, we’re protecting you. Our enemies are your enemies. Our fight is your fight. And our victory will be your victory.”
The speech, Netanyahu’s fourth to the Congress, was met with controversy amidst mounting criticism of Israel’s military actions, particularly from Democrats. Pressure has been building on Netanyahu to reach a deal for the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for a ceasefire.
Despite protests outside the Capitol and some lawmakers boycotting the speech, Netanyahu emphasized the urgency of continuing the military campaign until achieving total victory. He thanked President Biden and former President Trump for their support.
During the speech, Netanyahu addressed the importance of fighting against terror groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, portraying the conflict as a defense of both Israel and the United States.
He also discussed the need for a demilitarized and deradicalized Palestinian government in Gaza post-war, with the assistance of regional partners. However, he made it clear that Israel’s priority was to secure the release of all hostages and ensure the defense of the nation.
Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to continue the fight until achieving victory, stating, “No matter how long it takes, no matter how difficult the road ahead, Israel will not relent. Israel will not bend. We will defend our land. We will defend our people. We will fight until we achieve victory.”
