Strengthening our belief in, relationship with, and feelings toward Hashem is vital for our religious identity. However, since Hashem is not physically visible or fully knowable to us, how can we cultivate love, connection, and faith in Him?
There are two primary ways to address this challenge. The Rambam (Aseh 3) and Chinuch (418) suggest that studying Hashem’s word and observing His creation are key to developing love for Hashem and reinforcing our belief in Him.
Let’s delve into the first method recommended by the Rambam – studying the Torah. While performing mitzvot reflects our commitment to Hashem, delving deep into the teachings of the Torah can enhance our belief in and love for Hashem.
Belief – Revealing the Divine
One way Torah study strengthens our belief in Hashem is by showcasing elements that surpass human capabilities. The Torah contains information and prophecies that ancient humans could not have known, indicating its Divine origin.
Knowledge of the Unseen
For instance, the Torah’s detailed list of animals with specific characteristics for kashrut demonstrates knowledge beyond human capacity. Additionally, descriptions of the creation of the earth and other future events validate the Torah’s Divine authorship.
Predictions and Fulfillment
The Torah’s accurate predictions about future events and the fate of the Jewish people over millennia further solidify our belief in Hashem’s existence. These prophecies, combined with the Torah’s complexity and depth, point to a Divine author behind its creation.
Love – Embracing Divine Wisdom
Delving into Torah study not only deepens our understanding of Hashem but also fosters love and appreciation for His wisdom. By unraveling the intricate layers of Torah teachings, we gain insight into Hashem’s thought process and His profound wisdom.
