Holy Martyr Hermias endured great suffering for his faith in Christ in the city of Comana during the persecution under Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161). Despite being urged by the governor Sebastian to sacrifice to the pagan gods in exchange for honors and mercy from the emperor, the brave old soldier steadfastly confessed his belief in Christ.
After enduring torture including being beaten, thrown into a red-hot oven, and poisoned with no harm coming to him, Saint Hermias continued to remain faithful. Even when subjected to more severe tortures such as being raked with sharp instruments, immersed in boiling oil, and having his eyes gouged out, he remained steadfast in his faith.
Despite all efforts to kill him, Saint Hermias miraculously survived each ordeal and even performed miracles, such as healing the blind in the name of Jesus Christ. In the end, the governor Sebastian, in a fit of rage, beheaded the saint with his own sword.
Christians secretly buried the body of the martyr Hermias, and his relics were known for bestowing numerous healings. Whether he contested during the reign of Marcus Aurelius or Antoninus Pius, Saint Hermias’ unwavering faith and miraculous endurance of torture serve as a testament to his devotion to Christ.
