Hamas announced that it will delay its next release of Israeli hostages, citing violations of the ceasefire agreement by Israel.
Following the controversial release of three Israeli hostages from Gaza, which caused widespread concern due to their poor health, President Donald Trump reiterated his plan to depopulate Gaza and have the United States take control of the territory.
Trump stated in a recent interview on Fox News that he envisions building safe communities away from the current danger zones and providing better housing for Palestinians, eliminating their right to return to Gaza.
The next scheduled release of hostages is set for Saturday, Feb. 15, with previous snags in the agreement having been resolved. The ceasefire’s first phase began on Jan. 19 and is set to continue until March 2, with 17 hostages expected to be released during this phase, including eight confirmed deceased individuals.
Hamas accused Israel of breaching the truce by impeding the return of Palestinians to their homes, delaying aid deliveries, and firing on residents. They demanded compensation for these alleged violations.
In response, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the Israeli military to be on high alert. This directive followed Israel’s withdrawal from the Netzarim corridor, a pivotal area in Gaza that had been controlled by the Israeli military.
Hamas’ statement has added further uncertainty to the fragile ceasefire. The current phase was supposed to lead to the withdrawal of all Israeli troops from Gaza in exchange for the release of all living hostages by Hamas. However, several obstacles stand in the way of this progression.
Negotiations for the second phase are ongoing, but the details remain unclear. Additionally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, has expressed reluctance to proceed with the second phase, potentially jeopardizing Netanyahu’s government.
The debate over the hostages and the future of Gaza has intensified, with critics urging Netanyahu to prioritize the release of hostages while he and his supporters advocate for a Gaza without Hamas governance, aligning with Trump’s vision.
