A devastating wildfire has swept through Northern Attica, engulfing the historic Monastery of Panagia Axion Esti in the Varnava area, a cherished institution of the Archdiocese of Athens. The Fire Brigade has reported critical conditions in Varnava, with the fire causing significant damage to residential areas and the monastery’s grounds. The monastery, known for its cultural and religious significance, houses valuable treasures and ecclesiastical relics belonging to the Archdiocese of Athens.
Despite prompt response from the fire brigade, the strong winds have fueled the blaze, turning it into a massive wildfire with multiple fronts. Evacuation orders have been issued for residents of nearby settlements, including Stamata, Mikrochori Oropos, Grammatiko, Rodopoli, and Amygdaleza Stamata, as the fire poses a threat to both the monastery and surrounding communities.
Monasteries of Saint Ephraim and Penteli evacuated due to uncontrollable wildfires
The Monasteries of Saint Ephraim in Nea Makri and Penteli have been evacuated as an uncontrollable wildfire continues to ravage Northern Attica. The fire, now engulfing Mount Pentelicus, spans over 20 kilometers with shifting winds complicating firefighting efforts. A force of 510 firefighters and 32 aerial firefighting vehicles are actively engaged in combatting the blaze to protect lives, properties, and historic monastic sites.
Efforts are focused on safeguarding lives and properties as well as preserving these historic sites amid the critical situation.
