The traditional “Vasilopita” cutting ceremony of the Greek Community of Accra took place on Saturday, February 15, 2025, in the events hall of the Holy Metropolis of Accra, near the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Christ in the Abeka-Lapaz area.
Metropolitan Daniel of Accra officiated the blessing of the Vasilopita and conveyed the heartfelt wishes of Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa to the Greeks and Cypriots of Ghana.
The event was attended by the Honorable Mrs. Marianna Gavriil, Honorary Consul General of Greece and Cyprus in the Republic of Ghana, and the Honorable Mr. Konstantinos Demertzis, President of the Greek Community of Accra, who both warmly welcomed the organization of the event in their speeches. The Honorable Mrs. Sheba Moffat, Secretary of the Greek and Cypriot Consulate in Accra, also delivered a speech.
The Hellenic presence in Ghana consists of approximately 50 active members who engage in significant business activities, contributing to the country’s economy and fostering strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the nations.
All members of the Community, along with their families and numerous “Philhellenes” with their associates, enjoyed the gathering and the dinner provided.
A particularly significant and historic moment was the formal establishment and signing of the Founding Declaration of the Greek Community, during which all members approved the new Statutes.
For the first time, efforts are being made to legalize the Greek Community of Accra as a recognized association both in Ghana and Greece, through the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs. This development is of great joy to the Greeks, who will now be represented by an official Administrative Council to be elected.
The Greek and Cypriot Hellenism in Ghana now acquires an official voice, aiming for closer cooperation for the advancement and prosperity of our peoples.
