Today, on January 30, 2025, the Orthodox Church and the people of Albania gathered in Tirana to bid farewell to Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durres, and All Albania at his Funeral Service. The atmosphere was filled with deep emotion and reverence as they honored his monumental role in restoring the Orthodox Church of Albania after years of state-imposed atheism.
During the service, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew delivered a moving eulogy, acknowledging Archbishop Anastasios’ significant contributions to the Church’s revival. He described him as “the servant of the miracle of the resurrection from the dead of the local Church,” emphasizing his dedication to rescuing and reviving the Orthodox community in Albania, as well as his impactful missionary work in Africa.
Patriarch Bartholomew also reflected on Archbishop Anastasios’ origins and lifelong devotion to theology and mission work. He shared a touching anecdote about the Archbishop’s birth, highlighting his mother’s decision to choose life despite medical advice. This decision led to the birth of a brilliant man who dedicated his life to serving the Church and its people.
The Patriarch praised Archbishop Anastasios’ missionary legacy, which included the establishment of churches, monasteries, schools, hospitals, and other charitable institutions. Despite facing challenges, the Archbishop’s leadership was characterized by perseverance and sacrifice.
In conclusion, Patriarch Bartholomew expressed confidence in the future of the Church of Albania, believing that with the grace of God and the guidance of Archbishop Anastasios, a worthy successor will be chosen. He assured that the Mother Church of Constantinople will support and embrace the new Archbishop with love and commitment.
