Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew delivered a powerful speech at the centenary celebration of the Medical Association of Thessaloniki, emphasizing the spiritual and social responsibility that doctors carry. He highlighted the intersection of faith and medical science in serving humanity, stating that doctors are entrusted with an apostolic responsibility by the Church.
The Patriarch praised the audience of physicians for their cutting-edge scientific work in saving lives and restoring health, while upholding the Orthodox Church’s values of human dignity and sanctity. He emphasized the collaboration between faith and science, stressing the importance of compassion and moral responsibility in medical practice.
Bartholomew urged doctors to integrate Christian moral values with the Hippocratic Oath, emphasizing the relevance of these traditions in today’s society. He viewed the medical profession as a vocation, requiring a personal and spiritual commitment to virtue and service to humanity.
Referring to Christ as the “physician of souls and bodies,” the Patriarch emphasized the divine mandate to heal the sick, which is passed on to modern-day doctors. He highlighted the importance of approaching patients with compassion, regardless of their background or financial status.
The event was attended by dignitaries such as Greek Deputy Minister of Interior Kostas Gioulekas, local government officials, political party representatives, and high-ranking members of the clergy. Metropolitan Justin of Nea Krini and Kalamaria, Metropolitan Philotheos of Thessaloniki, and other notable figures were present.
