Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew delivered a heartfelt message in French during the reopening ceremony of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris on Sunday, December 8, 2024. The ceremony marked the completion of the cathedral’s restoration, and the Patriarch emphasized the spiritual significance of this historic moment.
In his message, Patriarch Bartholomew expressed:
“The reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris symbolizes unwavering faith, renewed hope, and profound resilience. We rejoice and offer our gratitude to God on this festive occasion. From the Ecumenical Patriarchate, we pray for this cathedral dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos and Virgin Mary to be a beacon of peace, unity, and reconciliation. May the light of Christ shine within these sacred walls and inspire all who enter.”
The Patriarch also addressed President Emmanuel Macron of France and Archbishop Laurent Ulrich of Paris, expressing his joy at the spiritual renewal taking place.
Notre-Dame Cathedral, known for its Gothic architecture, suffered a devastating fire on April 15, 2019, resulting in the destruction of its roof and spire. Extensive restoration work over the past five and a half years has now restored the cathedral to its former glory.
On December 8, 2024, the cathedral reopened to the public, marking a significant moment for believers and admirers of this architectural masterpiece. A festive liturgy was held to commemorate the occasion, attended by President Macron, religious leaders, and numerous visitors.
