Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew expressed his optimism regarding the progress of dialogue with the Turkish government on the reopening of the Halki Theological School during the inauguration of the new headquarters of “Byzantine Thessaloniki” and the opening of the exhibition titled “Holy Theological School of Halki – 180 Years of Contribution to Letters and Humanity.”
He mentioned that efforts to reopen the school are advancing rapidly, with the Turkish Minister of Education visiting the school and engaging in discussions with the abbot. The abbot and his team have also traveled to Ankara for further dialogue, with plans for more talks in the future. An expanded delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate is set to visit Ankara soon to continue discussions on technical details.
Patriarch Bartholomew expressed confidence in the school’s reopening, noting President Erdoğan’s initiative in the talks. He emphasized the school’s rich legacy, producing 220 Orthodox theologians over its 127 years of operation. Despite its closure 53 years ago, the Church remains determined to advocate for its reopening.
Reflecting on the recent Divine Liturgy at the school and a workshop on the “Hill of Hope” in celebration of its founding, the Patriarch praised the new exhibition showcasing the school’s life and history. He also mentioned ongoing renovation and expansion efforts generously sponsored by Athanasios Martinou and his wife Marini.
In conclusion, Patriarch Bartholomew commended the organizers of “Byzantine Thessaloniki” for preserving the legacy of the Halki Theological School and thanked those involved in the project. The journey toward reopening Halki’s doors continues to inspire hope and commitment from the Church and its supporters.
