Democratic Platform Committee Discusses Israel Policy
The committee drafting the Democratic platform heard differing opinions on the party’s Israel policy, with some advocating for continued military aid and others calling for cuts. The discussion highlighted the challenges the party faces as it approaches its August convention.
Any changes to the pro-Israel language in the Democrats’ 2020 platform could impact Jewish voters and donors, who have expressed concerns over Israel’s actions in Gaza and criticism from Democratic lawmakers. The Biden campaign is working to balance support for Israel with the party’s progressive base, particularly in swing states with significant Arab American populations.
During the meeting, witnesses like Halie Soifer and Dana Stroul emphasized the importance of ongoing assistance to Israel. They praised President Joe Biden for his support of Israel and efforts to address the needs of Palestinians affected by the conflict.
However, Elianne Farhat, representing the “Uncommitted” movement, called for a reevaluation of U.S. aid to Israel, citing polling data that showed support for cutting assistance among disaffected voters. She urged for immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an embargo on arms sales to Israel.
While platforms are non-binding, they reflect a party’s priorities. Soifer predicted that the Democratic platform would continue to support defense assistance for Israel, pointing to President Biden’s recent increase in emergency security assistance for Israel.
The platform drafting process includes input from various stakeholders and will be finalized before the start of the convention in August.
