On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, under the leadership of Patriarch Daniel of Romania, the Holy Synod of the Romanian Patriarchate gathered at the Patriarchal Palace in Bucharest.
The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church , the abbot of Sihăstria Putnei Monastery, as the Assistant Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chișinău on Wednesday evening.
The newly appointed bishop will be known as “His Grace Bishop Nectarie of Bogdania, Assistant Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chișinău.”
Following his election, the Metropolis of Bessarabia will now have four hierarchs within its structure.
The Synod’s discussions continued on Thursday, February 6, during which the following resolutions were made:
- Bishop Petroniu of Sălaj was suspended from his duties based on a decision by the Metropolitan Synod of the Metropolis of Cluj. The Holy Synod agreed to hold elections for his replacement in an upcoming session. In the meantime, Metropolitan Andrei of Cluj will oversee the administration of the diocese.
- Ecclesiastical sanctions were imposed on individuals who breached canonical and statutory rules. The Holy Synod reiterated the Romanian Orthodox Church’s stance of neutrality in political matters and electoral campaigns, underscoring the obligation of all bishops, clergy, and monks to comply with these synodal directives.
- As a special case, the elected Archbishop of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Atanasie, was granted temporary permission to fulfill his duties until his enthronement. However, he will not be authorized to sign official documents or represent the Church before British and Romanian authorities until the enthronement process is finalized.
