From 10th to 12th November 2024, Highgate House in Northampton welcomed a group of Presvyteres and Diakonisses from across the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain for the inaugural Clergy Wives Retreat. His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain, along with His Grace Bishop Raphael of Ilion and Archdeacon George Tsourous, led this inspiring gathering, creating an atmosphere of warmth, faith, and unity for all attendees.
The retreat offered a well-structured program, providing clergy wives with opportunities for prayer, reflection, and meaningful connections. Archbishop Nikitas kicked off the event with an introduction on the first evening, followed by a relaxed Q&A session, Compline, and evening fellowship.
Throughout the retreat, speakers shared insights and encouragement tailored to the unique roles of clergy wives. Fr Stavros Kofinas and Presbytera Georgia joined remotely from Greece to discuss the responsibilities of a Presbytera, resilience, and family life in the Orthodox tradition. His Grace Bishop Raphael delved into the mystery of Holy Confession, offering guidance and holding confessions for those interested.
Sister Theodora and Sister Kassiani from the Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Forerunner in Essex also participated. Sister Theodora led a session on “The Work of God and the Sacrifice of Love,” while Intern John Shinkwin conducted a Bible study on “Three Encounters of Jesus Christ with Women Disciples” and presented on the various Ministries of the Archdiocese.
The retreat’s schedule, featuring morning and evening prayers, educational sessions, and social time, fostered a sense of togetherness and rejuvenation. Fully supported by the Archdiocese, which covered all accommodation and meal expenses, the retreat was a valuable gift to all attendees. Participants cherished the time spent together, building bonds of encouragement and understanding. Many expressed reluctance to leave at the end, feeling enriched and empowered in their ministry.
