Following the recent assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed law enforcement to disclose any information they have regarding anti-right wing incitement.
Netanyahu expressed concern over the numerous threats of violence and murder directed towards him, his family, other government officials, and public figures. He emphasized the seriousness of these threats, labeling them as direct attacks on democracy. Despite the prevalent threats, Netanyahu noted that very little action has been taken to address the issue.
The incident that triggered Netanyahu’s response was the assassination attempt on Trump during a campaign event in Pennsylvania. While Trump survived the attack, the motives of the assailant remain unknown. Netanyahu connected this incident to a global trend of rising political violence.
Netanyahu criticized Attorney General Gali Baharav Miara for not taking action against those inciting violence. He also highlighted the ongoing protests against him, attributing them to his proposed judicial reforms and his handling of the recent Hamas invasion.
During the Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu played a video of protest leaders making inflammatory statements against him. Some called for his execution, while others likened him to Israel’s enemies. Netanyahu claimed that threats in Israel are primarily directed at the right, despite evidence of threats against leaders from various political backgrounds.
Amos Harel, a senior security analyst, accused Netanyahu of exploiting the Trump assassination attempt for political gain, stating that Netanyahu is heavily protected as the head of state.
