Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria welcomed the German Ambassador to Bulgaria, Irene Maria Plank, at the Synodal Palace today. Also in attendance was Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod.
Ambassador Plank expressed her gratitude and joy for meeting with Patriarch Daniel to discuss important issues concerning Bulgarian society and the spiritual significance of the Church within it.
Patriarch Daniel highlighted the vital role of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the nation’s history, emphasizing its strength and support during times of foreign rule. He noted the absence of interreligious conflicts in Bulgaria as a testament to the Church’s significance.
The discussion touched on various crises affecting society, with Patriarch Daniel stressing the importance of spiritual renewal and reconciliation with God to address these challenges effectively.
The meeting also underscored the positive relations the Bulgarian Orthodox Church maintains with other religious communities in the country. Patriarch Daniel advocated for the introduction of “Religious Studies” in Bulgarian schools to enhance the spiritual education of youth.
Gratitude was expressed to Germany for supporting Bulgarian expatriates, and recognition was given to the Diocese of Western and Central Europe for providing spiritual assistance to Bulgarians in Germany.
As a gesture of goodwill, Patriarch Daniel presented Ambassador Plank with a commemorative coin marking the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky and an album featuring artwork and photos of the Rila Monastery. Both sides expressed optimism for future meetings and collaboration to strengthen cooperation.
