The recent court decision in Bulgaria, allowing the possibility of registering a parallel “Orthodox Church,” has caused controversy and division within the country. The Bulgarian Patriarchate responded firmly, expressing deep concerns about the implications for the unity of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and its role in society. The decision raised fears of fragmentation within the Church and its faithful, leading to heightened discussions among state and ecclesiastical leaders.
In response to these developments, Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria and several Metropolitans met with President Rumen Radev on January 3, 2024. Also present at the meeting was Associate Professor Dr. Maria Kyoseva, legal advisor to the Holy Synod.
Patriarch Daniel briefed President Radev on the implications of the court decision and the stance of the Holy Synod. President Radev emphasized the importance of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church as a unifying force in the country’s history and identity.
He stressed the indivisibility of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the need for the state to support its unity. President Radev assured his commitment to preserving the unity of the Church as a vital component of national sovereignty.
President Radev acknowledged the historical role of the Orthodox Church in Bulgaria and its significance for the nation. Patriarch Daniel expressed gratitude for the state’s recognition of the Church’s contributions to the country’s history and identity.
The meeting highlighted the need to learn from past divisions and work towards maintaining the unity of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Both parties expressed a commitment to collaboration for the benefit of national unity and the preservation of the Church’s role in society.
