On August 27, 2024, Bishop Petar of Toplički, Vicar of the Patriarch of Serbia, presided over the memorial service honoring Patriarch German of Serbia at the Church of Saint Mark. The service was conducted to commemorate the anniversary of Patriarch German’s passing and to celebrate his revered memory.
Biography of Patriarch German of Serbia
Patriarch German of Serbia, originally named Hranislav Đorić, was born in 1899 and played a significant role in the Serbian Orthodox Church.
After completing his studies in theology in Belgrade and law in Paris, he was ordained as a deacon in 1927 and later as a priest. Following the death of his wife, he entered monastic life and eventually became the Bishop of Moravia in 1951.
In 1958, he succeeded Patriarch Vikentije and guided the Church through a period of intense persecution.
Patriarch German is remembered for his efforts in revitalizing church activities, expanding dioceses, and resuming the construction of the Saint Sava Temple in Belgrade after years of delays.
He passed away on August 27, 1991.
