Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop Varlaam of Ploiești led the Divine Liturgy at Saint Catherine University Chapel to inaugurate the new academic year at the Orthodox Theology Faculty in Bucharest.
After the service, Bishop Varlaam shared Patriarch Daniel’s blessing message and encouraged the young theology students to blend prayer with their studies.
The Importance of Spiritual Preparation in Theology
“Intellectual-academic and spiritual preparations are interconnected, so I urge you to utilize the university chapel for prayer. The study of theology is not confined to classrooms and libraries but is enriched by spiritual experiences in the church,” explained Bishop Varlaam on October 1.
He emphasized the significance of spiritual readiness through prayer and meditation, alongside academic learning and contemplation of God’s creation.
Bishop Varlaam referenced the Sermon on the Mount, highlighting the necessity of purity of heart to comprehend God’s mysteries. He stressed that a pure heart is essential for a profound understanding of divine truths.
The Bishop advised the students to pursue theological studies along with complementary disciplines like psychology, sociology, and pedagogy to effectively engage with the complexities of the world.
Inspiration from Saint Cleopas of Sihăstria
Bishop Varlaam cited the recent canonization of Saint Cleopas of Sihastria as an exemplary figure for the students to emulate. Despite minimal formal education, Saint Cleopas gained wisdom through prayer, meditation, and studying religious texts.
The students were encouraged to make the most of their time at the faculty, learning from the wisdom of their professors and engaging in meaningful academic pursuits.
Responsibilities of Theology Faculty Members
Dean Fr. Cosmin Pricop discussed the profound responsibility of theology faculty members in shaping the students’ education and character. He emphasized the importance of imparting theological knowledge while also fostering personal growth and values.
The students were then introduced to the faculty and briefed on the upcoming academic year in the Ioan G. Coman Amphitheater. Information about scholarships, accommodation, and the new timetable was provided by the Association of Orthodox Theology Students.
