During the Sunday of Orthodoxy, Bishop Sofronie of Oradea highlighted the significant disparity between the abundance of negative imagery in today’s society and the sacred role of holy icons as portals to an alternate reality—the Kingdom of God.
Icons as a Solution for a Troubled Society
Bishop Sofronie remarked, “Countless distressing images of chaos, disorder, malevolence, and aggression saturate various media outlets, from traditional platforms to modern digital channels, impacting not only the youth but also the elderly, who are influenced by manipulative tactics unrelated to Christian values or divine intentions.”
In this context, he added, “Amidst the pervasive presence of unbridled violence and hostility, icons, sacred images, liturgical practices, and the Holy Spirit’s presence within the Church’s communal worship—and subsequently extending into the world—serve as remedies, healing agents, sources of peace, and tranquility.”
Transformation Through Inner Renewal
The Bishop of Oradea emphasized that “the Church’s extended prayers during the Holy Lenten season, the reverent visages of Saints depicted in icons, and the serenity emanating from the Holy Eucharist in communion offer a remedy to global violence.”
Episcopal Milestone
On the Sunday of Orthodoxy, Bishop Sofronie commemorated 18 years since assuming the episcopal role in Oradea. Furthermore, on March 11, he celebrated his namesake day.
