Assistant Bishop Timotei of Prahova presided over the exhumation service of the holy relics of Saint Sofian of St Anthimos Monastery at Căldărușani Monastery near Bucharest on Monday morning.
The revered relics were first placed in the cemetery church for a special service before being transferred to St Anthimos Monastery.
According to the Assistant Bishop of the Archdiocese of Bucharest, a specific ritual was followed during the exhumation, involving prayers for the forgiveness of sins and the sharing of joy in the Lord.
Saint Sofian, known as the “Spiritual father of Bucharest,” spent a significant part of his life in Bucharest but chose to be laid to rest at St Anthimos Monastery, a place with a rich monastic tradition.
The exhumation was carried out to comply with Church regulations for the preparation of holy relics. The relics will be placed in a silver reliquary currently being crafted at the Romanian Patriarchate’s workshops in anticipation of the canonization proclamation in early 2025.
The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church decided to canonize Saint Sofian during sessions held on July 11-12, 2024, along with 15 other venerable saints. The canonization ceremony is scheduled for 2025, coinciding with the centennial celebration of the Romanian Patriarchate.
On the same day, the relics of Saint Dumitru Stăniloae were also exhumed.
