On June 18, 2024, the Global Sustainability Network (GSN) hosted its annual conference in London, bringing together religious leaders, academics, activists, and experts to tackle the pressing issue of modern slavery and human trafficking. Archbishop Nikitas and Dr. Petre Breazu represented the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, with Dr. Breazu being a member of the Patriarchal Taskforce on Modern Slavery from the University of Cambridge.
Archbishop Nikitas participated as a keynote speaker on the panel focused on Developing the Contribution of Faith Leaders and Faith Communities. He highlighted the crucial role of religious leaders in combatting these injustices. This panel, featuring Archbishop Nikitas and Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Declaration against Modern Slavery at the Vatican—a pivotal moment for the GSN. Archbishop Nikitas shared his expertise and spiritual leadership, emphasizing the moral obligation and transformative influence faith communities possess in the fight against exploitation.
During his address, Archbishop Nikitas emphasized the significance of unity among different faiths in addressing modern slavery, advocating for a holistic approach that combines spiritual guidance with practical initiatives. This approach involves not only supporting victims but also educating communities to identify and prevent trafficking and exploitation. The session concluded with a call to action, urging faith communities to deepen their involvement and collaborate more effectively with other sectors such as government, business, and civil society. Archbishop Nikitas’ insights served as a powerful reminder of the potential for faith leaders to drive change, instilling hope and mobilizing efforts towards a world free from slavery and human trafficking.
