Archbishop George of New Justiniana and All Cyprus will visit Bucharest next week to take part in the festivities honoring Saint Demetrius the New.
During his first visit to Romania as the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Archbishop George will bring a special gift for pilgrims: the revered relics of Saint Lazarus, also known as the “friend of the Lord.”
The welcoming ceremony for the holy relics will take place on Thursday afternoon at the Patriarchal Hill, immediately following the “Way of the Saints” procession.
On Sunday, Archbishop George will join His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of Romania in serving during the feast of Saint Demetrius the New.
Following the passing of Archbishop Chrysostomos II, Archbishop George was elected as Archbishop of Cyprus in December 2022. The Romanian Orthodox Church and the Church of Cyprus have a strong bond.
In a recent visit to Cyprus, a delegation from the Romanian Patriarchate brought the relics of Saint Cyprian from Bucharest’s Zlătari Church for a pilgrimage.
The Orthodox Church of Cyprus, under the leadership of an Archbishop, has authority over the entire island of Cyprus and gained autocephaly in 431 AD at the Third Ecumenical Council.
