The Latin Amalfinon Monastery of Athos has a fascinating history that is often overlooked in the annals of Mount Athos. This monastery thrived from the tenth century until the late thirteenth century, and remarkably, it continued to foster spiritual unity between Eastern and Western Church monks for over two centuries following the Christian schism of 1054.
All these historical details and more are meticulously explored in the documentary “Amalfinon – Benedictine Monastery on Mount Athos,” now available in five languages.
The film was crafted to commemorate the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, a symbolic event representing the unity of Christians from both the East and the West. Blessed by Metropolitan Dimitrios (Ploumis) of France, Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in Europe and Chairman of the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops of France, this film sheds light on a lesser-known chapter of Christian history.
