As we prepare for Shavuot, we must remember the unique aspect of Torah study. In Pirkei Avos, it is mentioned that the Torah is acquired through 48 qualities. This means that in order to truly absorb the Torah, one must possess the character traits that align with it. This includes having a kind heart, as well as practicing humility and proper behavior.
When Hashem chose the Jewish people, it was not because they were the largest or most popular, but because they practiced humility and did not aggrandize themselves. This trait of humility is essential for successful Torah study, as exemplified by the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai and through the leadership of Moshe Rabbeinu.
It is crucial for those seeking a Torah education to also focus on developing good character traits and behavior. Without proper behavior, Torah success may be elusive. This is why a curriculum of mussar study and emphasis on mentchlichkeit behavior is essential in yeshivas.
As we reflect on the revelation at Sinai this Shavuot, let us renew our commitment to Torah study and also strive to refine our behavior. By doing so, we can merit great Torah success, good health, and blessings in all aspects of our lives.
