From May 26 to May 29, 2024, the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of America, Australia, Canada, and Europe gathered to host the 4th Archon International Conference on Religious Freedom: Protecting Religious Freedom, Democracy & Human Rights.
The Conference kicked off with Archbishop Elpidophoros of America leading the Divine Liturgy at the Annunciation Metropolitan Cathedral in Athens, Greece. A special Memorial Service followed, honoring the victims of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and other martyrs of religious persecution.
The welcome reception on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the Foreign Ministry welcomed participants to the conference. Remarks were given by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Minister Kotsiras, Archon Athanasios Martinos, and Archon National Commander Anthony J. Limberakis, M.D.
The official opening of the Conference took place on Monday, May 27, 2024, at the Stoa of Attalos. Keynote speaker John Chrysoulakis addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of unity and peace in troubled times.
The first session at the National Historical Museum focused on Democracy, Authoritarianism, and the challenges faced by faith communities worldwide. Later, participants enjoyed a private tour of the Acropolis Museum followed by a welcome dinner hosted by Mr. Athanasios Martinos and Mrs. Marina Martinos.
On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, the second and third sessions explored the relationship between Freedom of Religion or Belief and global trends, as well as the implications of Human Rights and Religious Freedom on the geopolitical order. The day concluded with a cocktail reception at the American School of Classical Studies.
Wednesday, May 29, 2024, saw the first summit of global Archons at the Old Parliament in Athens, coinciding with the 4th Archon International Conference on Religious Freedom.
The Old Parliament National Historical Museum hosts a farewell dinner to close the conference.
