Serbian Patriarch Porfirje led the Divine Liturgy at the Church of Saint Sava in Vračar, accompanied by diocesan bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church and a large congregation, signaling the start of this year’s Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church. During the Liturgy, he delivered a sermon, emphasizing the victory in Christ and underscoring the importance of His Resurrection as a symbol of His love for humanity and the Church.
However, the planned session of the Holy Council of Bishops, set to take place at the Church of the Holy Apostles in the Stavropygic Lavra of the Peć Patriarchate, hit an unexpected hurdle. Serbian Patriarch Porfirje and the bishops were prevented from entering Kosovo and Metohija on Monday, May 13, 2024, stopped at the Merdare administrative crossing by officials from the provisional authorities in Pristina without clarification.
Undeterred, the crucial meetings of the highest ecclesiastical body of the Serbian Orthodox Church, led by Patriarch Porfirje and attended by diocesan bishops, will continue on May 15, 2024, in the Crypt of St. Sava Church in Vračar. The agenda for the session, which includes topics submitted by the Holy Synod of Bishops, will involve reviewing reports on the pastoral work of diocesan bishops, central church bodies, organs, and institutes. A press release detailing the outcomes of the session will be published afterwards.
