(JTA) — Macklemore Releases Anthem in Support of Pro-Palestinian Protesters at Columbia University
One week after pro-Palestinian protesters were removed and arrested from a building at Columbia University, rapper Macklemore has released a new track in their honor.
The song, titled “Hind’s Hall,” pays tribute to the protesters who occupied Hamilton Hall, renaming it after a Palestinian girl who died in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas conflict. The track, along with a video featuring footage from Gaza and college campuses, has garnered over 16 million views on Twitter and received praise on Instagram.
Macklemore’s song supports the student protests, accusing Israel of apartheid and genocide, endorsing divestment from Israel, and rejecting claims of antisemitism. The lyrics also suggest that Israel is a white supremacist nation.
The song acknowledges the war between Israel and Hamas as a continuation of the Nakba and recognizes Jewish individuals who have participated in the protests. It addresses the criticism of the protests, including allegations of antisemitism and harassment of Jewish students.
Furthermore, the track includes a pledge not to support President Biden due to his backing of Israel and references a public feud between rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake, the latter being Jewish.
Known for his support of progressive causes, Macklemore has been vocal in his advocacy for Palestinians since the start of the conflict. He has also pledged to donate any royalties earned from the song to UNRWA, the aid agency for Palestinians.
Despite previous accusations of antisemitism, Macklemore continues to use his platform to raise awareness about social justice issues and support marginalized communities.
As a graduate of Evergreen State College, which has a history of anti-Israel activism, Macklemore remains committed to using his music to address important social and political issues.
The song is expected to be available on streaming platforms soon, with proceeds going towards supporting Palestinian aid efforts.
