On Sunday, April 28, 2024, the Feast of Palms was celebrated in the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
On this feast, the Church commemorates the triumphal entry of our Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem after the resurrection of Lazarus. He was welcomed by the children of the Jews who laid down their clothes, held palm branches, and chanted “hosanna the Son of David, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.”
The celebrations began with Vespers on Saturday afternoon, led by H.H.B. our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos, along with High Priests and Holy Sepulchre Hieromonks. The chanting was performed by Hierodeacon Simeon, Fr Ioannis Antoniou, and Mr Eustathios Tsoumanis in the presence of pilgrims.
On Sunday morning, the Holy Sepulchre Fathers processed from the Patriarchate to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, carrying palm branches. The Divine Liturgy was presided over by Patriarch Theophilos, with the participation of other clergy members. The service was attended by dignitaries and pilgrims despite the ongoing war.
A procession around the Sacred Edicule and the shrines followed the Liturgy, accompanied by hymns of the feast.
The celebrations concluded with a return to the Patriarchate Reception Hall, escorted by the Body of Scouts. The Patriarch extended His blessings for the Holy Week and Easter.
