Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain, President of the Conference of European Churches (CEC), delivered a poignant address at the UK Parliament on Monday, April 22, 2024, at the invitation of ROconect. The focus of the event was on “Ensuring Remembrance: Advocating For Education and Commemoration of the Roma Holocaust in the UK.”
In his speech, Archbishop Nikitas reflected on the mistakes of the past, the sins of previous generations, and the harm caused by ignorance and fear. He shared personal experiences from his childhood and discussed the prejudice he witnessed in the United States. The Archbishop also highlighted the powerful partnership between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Archbishop Iakovos, who stood together in Selma, Alabama.
Furthermore, Archbishop Nikitas emphasized the importance of forgiveness and moving forward rather than dwelling on past grievances. He expressed his commitment, as well as that of his Archdiocese, to supporting the Roma community in their pursuit of justice, equality, and truth.
