Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, stating that “The Ecumenical Patriarchate is constantly praying for an end to the violence and for the establishment of a just peace.” His remarks were made on Saturday, March 8, 2025, following the Divine Liturgy at the Church of Saint Theodore of the Community of Vlanga. Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv, Primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, was also present at the event.
During his speech, the Ecumenical Patriarch praised His Beatitude for his leadership of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine during the challenging times of the war that began in 2022. He emphasized the importance of standing for the rights of the people and working towards peace.
The Ecumenical Patriarchate’s prayers for peace align with the decisions of the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church in Crete in 2016, which condemned war as a result of evil and sin in the world. The Synod emphasized that every war poses a threat to creation and life and condemned wars driven by nationalism and territorial disputes.
The Patriarch emphasized the importance of dialogue, peace, and brotherhood, as well as protecting the rights and dignity of every individual. He expressed faith in a God of love, peace, and justice guiding history.
During the event in Vlanga, the Ecumenical Patriarch thanked Metropolitan Maximos of Selyvria for his contributions and praised the clergy and community members for their dedication. He also acknowledged Archbishop Makarios of Australia for his support to the communities in Constantinople.
Following the Divine Liturgy, a reception was held where the Metropolitan of Kyiv expressed gratitude to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for its support. An official luncheon was hosted by the Ecumenical Patriarch in honor of His Beatitude and his entourage.
Later, a meeting took place at the Patriarchal Office with representatives from the Mother Church and the Church of Ukraine in attendance.
