The Church honors the memory of Saint Basil the Confessor, known for his opposition to iconoclasm, Hieromartyr Proterius, the 5th-century Archbishop of Alexandria, and New Virgin-martyr Kyranna, who bravely stood up for her faith during the Ottoman rule in Greece.
The life and martyrdom of St. Kyranna serve as a powerful reminder that the Church continues to produce saints in every era. Hailing from a village near Thessaloniki, she was admired for her beauty, both inside and out. Despite facing threats and coercion from a janissary seeking her hand in marriage, Kyranna remained steadfast in her devotion to Christ. Falsely accused of planning to convert to Islam, she endured imprisonment and torture, affirming her commitment to Christ until her death in 1751.
May we draw inspiration from the courage and faith of St. Kyranna in our own lives.
