On February 22, Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria and the accompanying church delegation visited the Orthodox Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Essex, England.
Founded by St. Sophrony Sakharov in 1959, the monastery is under the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s jurisdiction and is home to monks and nuns from over 13 nationalities.
The Patriarch was joined by Metropolitan Anthony of Western and Central Europe, Metropolitan Pakhomiy of Vidin, Bishop Gerasimos of Melenik, Bishop Meletios of Znepol, Archimandrites Dobromir Dimitrov and Julian Angelov, Deacon Angel Vodenicharov, the Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Kingdom, Mr. Tihomir Stoichev, and others.
Upon arrival, the Patriarch was warmly welcomed by the abbot, Archimandrite Peter, and the monastery’s community. A doxology and memorial service were held, and the Patriarch explored St. Sophrony’s living quarters and the newly constructed church dedicated to him.
The monastery’s brotherhood hosted a festive meal for the visitors, and the Patriarch expressed gratitude for the hospitality and the opportunity to honor a saintly figure. Commemorative gifts were exchanged before the delegation departed.
Official Dinner in Honor of Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria in London
The following day, Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain hosted an official dinner for Patriarch Daniel at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. The event was attended by clergy members and the Greek Orthodox community.
Archbishop Nikitas emphasized the importance of unity among Orthodox Christians and commended the consecration of an Orthodox church in London. Patriarch Daniel expressed appreciation for the warm reception and highlighted the significance of bearing witness to unity in the faith.
The dinner concluded with the exchange of commemorative gifts.
