On February 23, 2025, the Bulgarian Orthodox community in London celebrated a historic milestone with the consecration of the newly built Church of St. John of Rila. This sacred event marked a long-awaited dream for generations of Bulgarians living in the United Kingdom, providing them with a dedicated place of worship in the heart of London.
The consecration was led by Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria, who traveled to the UK at the invitation of Metropolitan Anthony of Western and Central Europe. This visit was particularly significant as it marked Patriarch Daniel’s first official journey abroad since his enthronement. Accompanying him were Metropolitan Pachomius of Vidin, Bishop Gerasimos of Melnik, and Bishop Meletius of Znepole, alongside clergy from all the Orthodox jurisdictions serving in the United Kingdom.
During the consecration, Patriarch Daniel brought a relic of St. Jacob the Persian, which was enshrined in the altar, sanctifying the new temple where the Divine Liturgy will now be celebrated regularly for the salvation of all who enter with faith.
A distinguished guest at the event was Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain (Ecumenical Patriarchate), who played a pivotal role during the church’s construction by offering the Bulgarian Orthodox community the use of a Greek church in North London. The ceremony was also attended by members of the Bulgarian royal family, including Crown Prince Boris and Prince Kyril, as well as Robert Rigby, the Mayor of Westminster, and representatives from the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches. Hundreds of Orthodox Bulgarians gathered for the occasion, filling the new church, its courtyard, and surrounding areas.
In recognition of his dedication and efforts in building and beautifying the church, Patriarch Daniel personally awarded the title of “Economos” to Father Dobromir Dimitrov, the church’s rector, for his exemplary service to the Bulgarian Orthodox community in the UK.
