Israeli Minister Opposes Future Stages of Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal
Israeli Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli announced his opposition to voting for future stages of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal during a gathering of American Jewish leaders. The ongoing negotiations involve the release of remaining Israeli hostages and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in the second stage of the ceasefire. Despite polls showing support for advancing the deal to the second stage, Chikli voiced his concerns about releasing Palestinian security prisoners in exchange for the hostages.
Chikli, who was one of two Likud party ministers to vote against the first phase of the deal, emphasized his stance against the second stage. He expressed his reluctance to support a deal that could potentially endanger more victims in various Israeli cities.
While many American Jewish organizations have been actively advocating for the release of hostages following Hamas’ attack, Chikli’s opposition has sparked criticism. Some groups, like UnXeptable, have petitioned against his participation in such gatherings, citing the potential risks to the hostages’ lives.
Despite the uncertainties surrounding the ceasefire agreement, the first stage proceeded as planned with the recent release of three Israeli hostages and Palestinian security prisoners. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also expressed support for President Donald Trump’s plan to take control of Gaza after depopulation.
Although there have been conflicting statements from various parties involved, Trump’s Middle East envoy remains optimistic about the continuation of the ceasefire agreement’s second stage. Discussions are ongoing, and the future of the deal remains uncertain.
