Non-formal educational activities for Romanian children in Glasgow have commenced at a new parish school location, which was recently blessed by Archbishop-elect Atanasie of Great Britain and Northern Ireland during the patronal celebrations of the “Presentation of the Lord to the Temple” Parish.
The event was graced by the presence of Andreea Ioana Berechet, Romania’s Consul General in Edinburgh, who generously donated educational materials, and Aurelia Nicoleta Titirez, Head of the Romanian Consular Office in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Prayers for Wisdom and Identity
The archbishop-elect led prayers for the successful continuation of the educational programs and engaged in meaningful discussions with the children and youth in attendance at the school.
He underscored the significance of faith, culture, and traditions, emphasizing the importance of preserving Romanian national identity. As part of the feast day celebrations, he also bestowed upon the Romanian community in Glasgow a relic of Saint Columba of Iona, who now stands as the second patron saint of the church.
A Growing Romanian Community in Scotland
The “Presentation of the Lord” Parish in Glasgow was established in 2008 by Father Marcel Oprișan, who currently serves in Bârsana, Maramureș. In the past year, the parish has acquired the church building where it now operates.
The community also boasts one of the largest Romanian-language libraries in the diaspora, housing over 3,000 books spanning various fields.
