Following the passing of Archbishop Anastasios of Albania, there has been much discussion about his remarkable legacy and the significant impact he had on the Orthodox Church and the nation. His Funeral Service was attended by Church Primates, clergy, political leaders, and laypeople, all coming together to honor a Hierarch whose absence is deeply felt.
As the mourning continues, the question of his successor has started to arise.
Among the names being quietly mentioned is Metropolitan Ioannis of Korçë, who is considered to be a spiritual heir of Archbishop Anastasios, having worked closely with him for thirty years.
Archbishop Anastasios had great confidence in Metropolitan Ioannis, often involving him in inter-Christian dialogues and international Church matters. Being the first bishop ordained by the late Archbishop is a clear indication of the trust placed in him.
Sources within the Church of Albania describe Metropolitan Ioannis as a highly capable hierarch with a strong theological background. A graduate of the Holy Cross Theological School in Boston, he is proficient in Albanian, Greek, and English, which enhances his ability to connect both locally and globally.
Currently, it seems that Metropolitan Ioannis is the most suitable candidate among the members of the Holy Synod to succeed Archbishop Anastasios.
If elected, Metropolitan Ioannis is expected to continue the work and vision of his predecessor, following the path that has already been laid out.
While the task of stepping into Archbishop Anastasios’ role is daunting, the groundwork laid during his three decades of service provides a strong foundation for the Church’s future. It will be up to his successor to build upon this legacy and uphold the example set by the late Archbishop Anastasios.
