On January 25, 2025, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia extended his condolences to the Holy Synod of the Albanian Orthodox Church following the passing of Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durrës, and All Albania.
“I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and All Albania,” Patriarch Kirill expressed. “I offer my sincere condolences on behalf of the clergy, monks, and believers of the Russian Orthodox Church. This is a great loss for the sister Albanian Church and the entire Orthodox community.”
Patriarch Kirill praised Archbishop Anastasios’ lifelong commitment to serving Christ and His Church. “From a young age, His Beatitude devoted himself to the Lord’s work. He was a dedicated missionary, preacher, and shepherd, especially during his time in Africa, where he excelled in spreading the Word of God and building strong church communities,” the message stated.
The Patriarch highlighted Archbishop Anastasios’ instrumental role in revitalizing the Albanian Orthodox Church after years of persecution under communist rule. “We in the Russian Church, who also endured persecution, deeply respect Archbishop Anastasios’ efforts in restoring the Albanian Orthodox Church. His leadership, academic background, and experience in Africa were invaluable in rejuvenating church life in Albania.”
Patriarch Kirill fondly recalled his personal connection with Archbishop Anastasios, noting their longstanding friendship and mutual visits. “I had the privilege of visiting Albania at Archbishop Anastasios’ invitation in 2018, witnessing the fruits of his labor and the progress of the Albanian Synod.”
In conclusion, the Patriarch honored Archbishop Anastasios as a defender of tradition and faithful servant of Christ. “May he find eternal rest in the heavenly kingdom, free from pain and sorrow. Let us remember Archbishop Anastasios with love and respect.”
