Saint Euthymius the Great is celebrated today by our Church.
Saint Euthymius was born to devout parents in Melitene in Lesser Armenia in 377 AD. Despite his parents being childless for many years, his mother had a vision promising the birth of a child who would bring joy. Thus, he was named “Euthymius”, which means “good cheer.”
From a young age, he was dedicated to God, as the local bishop raised and educated him after his father’s passing. He was ordained a deacon and then a presbyter by the bishop, eventually becoming the abbot of the monastery of Melitene.
Driven by his passion for asceticism and solitude, Saint Euthymius journeyed to the Holy Land, where he gained renown for his morality, asceticism, and virtues, ultimately becoming the abbot of the Lavra monastery. He also engaged in missionary work among the Arabs before passing away in 474 AD.
