The condition of Archbishop Anastasios of Albania remains critical following emergency surgery to address a severe bleeding episode. The Archbishop underwent the procedure yesterday and was subsequently transferred to the ICU for further care.
“The next 48 hours are considered critical,” stated a medical bulletin released yesterday.
On Friday afternoon, Archbishop Anastasios was admitted to the operating room on an emergency basis and underwent gastrointestinal surgery performed by Dr. Stelios Kapiris, Director of the hospital’s Surgery Clinic. The operation concluded shortly before 6:30 p.m., and the Archbishop is now being closely monitored in intensive care.
The Archbishop had been experiencing a gastrointestinal bleed, which doctors began addressing immediately upon his admission to Evangelismos Hospital.
The 96-year-old primate’s health had rapidly deteriorated in the hours leading up to the surgery, necessitating intubation and transfer to the ICU.
Prayers continue among the faithful for his recovery as his condition remains serious.
