Saint Amphilochius, Bishop of Iconium, was born in Caesarea in Cappadocia, a city known for producing great Fathers and teachers of the Orthodox Church. He was a close relative of Saint Gregory the Theologian and a dear friend of Saint Basil the Great, both of whom he followed and learned from.
After spending about forty years as a strict ascetic in the wilderness, Saint Amphilochius received a divine call to become the Bishop of Iconium. Angels appeared to him in visions, confirming his appointment, and he was consecrated by them in a church.
Despite encountering opposition from other bishops, who were also directed by God to appoint him, Saint Amphilochius remained steadfast in his faith and dedication to his flock in Iconium. He tirelessly fought against heresies and participated in important Church councils.
Known for his intense prayer life and profound theological writings, Saint Amphilochius was a dedicated shepherd to his people until his peaceful repose in 394.
