Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia led the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy today at the Russian Holy Trinity Church in Tašmajdan, part of the Moscow Patriarchate in Belgrade. During the service, the Patriarch consecrated the newly completed frescoes, a significant moment in the church’s history.
Constructed between 1924 and 1925, the Holy Trinity Church holds great importance as a spiritual and cultural hub for the Russian emigration following the events of the October Revolution and civil war in Russia. It has served as a symbol of Russian Orthodox faith and culture in Serbia, showcasing the strong connection between the Serbian and Russian people.
In his sermon, Patriarch Porfirije reflected on the mysteries of life and faith, highlighting the partnership between divine grace and human choice. He emphasized, “Every miracle, including the miracle of life itself, is a result of the collaboration between the Life-Giver and human freedom. This partnership involves our Savior, who has already done everything for us, and our own dedication and effort to live in accordance with His teachings and the Gospel.”
Expressing gratitude for the unity between the Serbian and Russian Churches, Patriarch Porfirije congratulated the Russian faithful on the hundredth anniversary of the Holy Trinity Church. He remarked, “I extend my congratulations to our Russian brothers for maintaining this sacred space, where Russians in Serbia have gathered to pray for a century.”
The Patriarch also sent warm regards to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, offering prayers and requesting continued support. He concluded, “May the Lord watch over the Russian Church and its people for many years to come!”
