Before Hashem tells Avraham about what he will do to Sedom, He tells us that He chose Avraham to do Tzedaka and Mishpat, justice and righteousness. Hashem knew Avraham would pass on these values to the next generations, keeping the way of God.
This ethos is antithetical to Sedom, known for their terrible behavior. In contrast, Avraham exemplified Tzedaka, Mishpat, and Chessed. Avraham, Sarah, and Yishmael were known for their hospitality, as seen in the mitzvah of Hascnasat Orchim. Avraham’s dedication to helping others stood in stark contrast to the people of Sedom, who valued wealth over kindness and hospitality.
Despite his wealth, Avraham’s values remained true. It is common for individuals to change their values when blessed with wealth, but Avraham’s character remained steadfast in kindness and righteousness.
Let us aspire to follow Avraham’s example of pursuing kindness over wealth. May we be blessed with abundance, but more importantly, may we have the wisdom to impart the values of Tzedaka, Mishpat, Chessed, and good character to future generations.
Shabbat Shalom.
