Today, on November 1, the Holy Church honors the Holy Wonderworkers and Unmercenary Physicians Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs Cyrenia and Juliana of Clicia, and Venerable David of Euboea.
Cosmas and Damian, the Unmercenary Physicians, were born in Asia to Christian parents. After losing their father, they were raised by their mother Theodota, who instilled in them a strong Christian upbringing and education.
They focused on studying science and medicine, using their skills to help those in need without seeking any payment. Their selfless and compassionate care for the sick earned them the title of “unmercenary physicians” in the Church (Anargyroi in Greek).
Relying on their faith in the Triune God, Cosmas and Damian valued spiritual wealth over material riches. Following Jesus’ command to “Freely have you received, freely give,” they provided medical assistance without expecting any monetary rewards. They were known for offering their healing touch not only to humans but also to animals.
In the end, they passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and kindness.
