In a touching display of shared dedication to peace, Theophilos III, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, welcomed Consul General Diane Corner of Great Britain as she concluded her three-and-a-half-year term in Jerusalem. The farewell meeting, held at the Patriarchate’s historic headquarters, provided an opportunity to reflect on the enduring role of the Church in the Holy Land and the mutual commitment to upholding justice, humanity, and interfaith harmony.
“Since the early days of Christianity,” the Patriarch stated, “the Patriarchate of Jerusalem has been a steadfast guardian of peace and resilience, working hand in hand with Christian communities throughout the Holy Land. Our pastoral duty is a sacred obligation to uplift and safeguard the Christian presence in Jerusalem and the wider holy land, a responsibility we hold with deep reverence.”
He emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts with other Christian denominations and religious communities to promote dialogue and peace amidst the numerous challenges facing Jerusalem.
The Patriarch highlighted the ongoing hardships faced by Jerusalem, stating, “Jerusalem, a city revered by the three monotheistic faiths, is currently under significant pressure from Israeli radical groups seeking to marginalize other faith communities. These groups undermine our sacred heritage and jeopardize the core of our shared faith and peace in the region.”
In response to recent conflicts, the Patriarch elaborated on the Patriarchate’s humanitarian efforts, particularly in Gaza, where the Church has offered refuge to hundreds at the Monastery of St. Porphyrius. “In Gaza,” he explained, “the Patriarchate provides a beacon of hope amidst the turmoil of war, embodying the compassion and mercy central to our faith.”
The Patriarch expressed gratitude for the support the Patriarchate receives from the British government and King Charles III, highlighting the crucial role it plays during challenging times. He also called on the international community to take decisive action, emphasizing that “putting an end to hostilities is a moral imperative. The calls for peace from Gaza and Lebanon require an urgent and unified response to protect innocent lives and restore dignity to the oppressed.”
In conclusion, the Patriarch praised Consul General Corner for her outstanding service, expressing hope that she would continue to advocate for peace and justice in future diplomatic endeavors. “Your dedication to the people of the Holy Land and their pursuit of peace has made a lasting impact on this region. As you embark on new missions, we urge you to carry forward this message of hope.”
To mark her departure, the Patriarch presented her with a portrait of Jerusalem featuring the Holy Sepulchre and Al-Aqsa Mosque, symbolizing the enduring spirit of understanding across different faiths.
