The procession of the Icons of St. Demetrios and Virgin Mary Faneromeni took place this morning, October 25th, in Thessaloniki with great reverence. A large crowd gathered to witness this solemn event.
The icons were carried by military and security personnel, accompanied by priests, nuns, officials, and residents of Thessaloniki. The Greek Police Orchestra provided music for the procession. Leading the procession was Metropolitan Nikandros of Irinoupolis from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, along with other Metropolitans and clergy members.
Starting from the Holy Church at 11:00 a.m., the procession moved along Agiou Dimitriou Street, Venizelou Street, Egnatia Street, before returning to the Holy Church via Agia Sofia Street.
Thousands of people, including visitors from Greece, Cyprus, and Romania, gathered to witness the procession. Families lined the streets, capturing the moment on their phones. The faithful followed the entire route, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
The procession concluded successfully around noon. Attendees of all ages waited to venerate the icons and some even sang hymns with the priests during the procession.
This event marks the start of three days of celebrations in honor of the city’s patron saint, Saint Demetrios. Tomorrow, crowds are expected to gather at the churches for further veneration.
