The Orthodox Church honors Saint Eustathius the Great Martyr, his wife Theopiste, and their sons, Agapius and Theopistus, as well as Saint Meletius, Bishop of Cyprus, today.
After becoming a Christian, Placidas (before his baptism) was expelled from his military position and exiled with his family by the pagan emperor Trajan.
Separated from his family, Placidus was called back by Trajan to help in war efforts, where he played a significant role in securing victory.
Upon Trajan’s death, Hadrian asked Saint Eustathius to participate in an idolatrous feast, which he refused, declaring his faith in Christ as the source of victory.
For this refusal, Saint Eustathius and his family were imprisoned, tortured, and eventually martyred, remaining steadfast in their Orthodox faith.
