The Orthodox Church today celebrates the Apodosis (Leave-taking) of the Nativity of the Theotokos and remembers the martyrdom of Hieromartyr Autonomus († 313), Martyr Theodore of Alexandria, Martyr Oceanus, and Martyrs Macedonius, Tatian, and Theodulus in Phrygia during the 4th century.
Saint Autonomus, a dedicated bishop in Italy, fled persecution under Emperor Diocletian and settled in Soreus, Asia Minor, where he continued to preach the Gospel. He traveled to Lykaonia and Isauria, ordaining Cornelius as deacon before eventually making him a bishop for his excellent pastoral work.
The pagans, angered by Saint Autonomus’ success, stoned him to death while he was serving Divine Liturgy at the temple.
